It is common for many women to have nipple conditions that concern them and which affects not only their appearance but also their confidence. The cause for the change of nipple position or size may be attributed to several different issues including congenital inversion, natural ageing, significant weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Nipple conditions can be corrected with specialised surgery or in conjunction with breast surgery such as breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction surgery.
Inverted nipples are caused by tight and shortened breast duct tissue and for many women the nipples are either inverted temporarily or permanently. “Inverted Nipple Repair” surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that corrects an inverted or flattened nipple, with excellent results that last for the long-term
Due to reasons such as prolonged breast feeding or ageing, many women develop excessively large nipples that they tend to flop or droop down over the areola. As a result, many women who are considering Breast Augmentation have raised these concerns about their nipples. Surgery to correct this includes recessing the nipple into the areola by trimming redundant skin around the nipple. This procedure fully restores an appropriate nipple projection from the breast. Nipple or Areolar Reduction surgery can be done in conjunction with other breast surgery. Dr Girardi will assess and guide his patients as to the most appropriate course of action.
Many women are concerned about the size of their areolar complex. Sometimes the areolas may appear to be excessively large and out of proportion to a woman’s breasts and this enlargement can occur after childbirth or significant weight gain. Areolar Reduction Surgery is a procedure that reduces the size of the dark pigmented skin around the nipple.
The goal is to make the nipple look more subtle and less projected. An incision is made around the nipple to remove the dark pigmented area of the areola before it is closed with sutures. As the sutures dissolve over time, so too will any scars that develop from the procedure. Down time is not long and patients can normally return to normal activities within a few hours post-surgery.
Nipple or Areola Reduction surgery can be done in conjunction with other breast surgery. Dr Girardi will assess your specific condition, guide you as to the most appropriate course of action and advise the best way forward in terms of surgical technique.
