Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure to remove localised deposits of fat (lipodystrophy) on the surface of the body, between the skin and muscle.  Virtually any area of fat deposition can be liposuctioned and the main areas that liposuction is performed include lower abdomen and waist, buttocks, thighs, breasts, arms, chin and neck.  Another problem which can be treated by liposuction is overdeveloped male breast tissue (gynaecomastia).

Liposuction technology has advanced to become safer and less invasive. It is now one of the most popular cosmetic surgical treatments in the world.

Liposuction is suitable for healthy women and men who are near their ideal weight but wish to improve their firmness and shape in specific areas of the body that have not responded to dieting or weight loss efforts. You may feel that these remaining areas are out of proportion with your general physique and desired body definition and therefore you maybe an ideal canditate for liposuction.

Liposuction is also a useful adjunctive procedure performed in combination with other surgery. For example liposuction can be performed as part of facelift and/or necklift and breast reduction procedure.

The procedure

During the consultation, Dr Girardi will note important considerations such as your skin elasticity and estimate  the amount of fatty tissue requiring removal to determine that you are suitable for liposuction. Photographs of the area may be taken to assist with planning and monitoring your results after liposuction.

Liposuction maybe performed under local anaesthetic alone or combined general and local anaesthesia, and is usually performed as a day surgery procedure.  The duration of the operation varies depending on the number of body areas to be treated and the amount of fat being removed.  However sometimes it is difficult to predetermine how difficult the fat is to remove as the fat can vary in nature between individuals.

Traditionally, liposuction is performed through small skin incisions where a thin metal tube (cannula) around 5mm in diameter, attached to a suction device, is carefully inserted back and forth to extract fat cells from an area of the body.  New methods include fat 'melting' techniques such as  laser-assisted liposuction.

It is important to have realistic expectations prior to proceeding with liposuction. Although liposuction removes fat cells from areas on the surface of the body, it is not a treatment for weight loss per se and will have no effect on cellulite or stretch marks.
